Herman Yau is one of Hong Kong cinema’s most prolific and versatile filmmakers, known for moving fluidly between independent genre films and major commercial blockbusters. Since making his directorial debut with No Regret (1987), he has directed landmark works including The Untold Story, Ebola Syndrome, the Troublesome Night series, Ip Man: The Final Fight, Shock Wave, Shock Wave 2, and The White Storm 2: Drug Lords.

 

A graduate of Hong Kong Baptist College with a PhD in Cultural Studies from Lingnan University, Yau’s work is often distinguished by its sharp social commentary, focus on working-class lives, and deep connection to Hong Kong identity. His latest film, the self-funded noir drama We’re Nothing at All (2026), continues that fiercely independent tradition.
